Giving dignity to those without.

One day I heard my parents talking about a child they knew whose family was having a lot of challenges to meet the day to day basic needs of life. I overheard them say that they were giving my gently used clothing to the child and that she really needed socks and underwear too. I was shocked to hear that something as basic as these things were on someone’s wish list.

This story bothered me and I felt sad to know that there are children that grow up wearing used socks and underwear, or worse, none at all. Poverty remains a fact of life for many people in Calgary who are struggling with inadequate incomes to meet their basic needs. When this occurs, people are often forced to make difficult choices between things that most people take for granted.

My family has taught me that life is not just about me; it is also important to care about other people and get out there and make a difference in this world.

My dad is the most caring person and is always eager to help others. My mom is a problem solver. Together, we decided that the often ignored issue of tots, tweens, and teens not having socks and underwear was something I wanted to help tackle.

Obviously, a piece of fabric doesn't have the strength to solve poverty but this small gesture campaign is something that I – an ordinary kid – can do. I believe that providing children the basic human dignity of having a package of new socks and underwear will help to ensure that no child will ever suffer the humiliation of pulling a pair of used ones out of a bag of donated clothes. I think this is something that anyone can relate to.

I realize just how blessed my life is and that there are many in my own community with struggles I will never face. Coming from a family of philanthropists and entrepreneurs, it is in my blood to want to make this world a better place. I hope you are inspired to join me!
